Methodologies
A methodology is a specification for the calculation of emission reductions achieved by a CDM or voluntary emissions reduction (VER) project during its operation. Essentially, it is a handbook which includes the formulas and specifications for monitoring the emissions reductions of a project. This is a critical area as the CDM market is based on principles of accountability and transparency. Each CDM methodology needs to be approved by the Methodology Panel and the CDM Executive Board. Methodologies approved by the CDM Executive Board can also be used for VER projects. The CDM Methodology Panel sits every two months and new methodology submissions must reach the panels prior to sitting.
The content of a methodology depends on the applicable project type. A methodology for a biofuels project looks completely different from a fuel switching methodology.
Developing a new methodology is potentially time intensive undertaking. For this reason it is advisable to work with existing approved methodologies, or to apply for a revision on an existing methodology where this is might be required. In the case where an approved methodology is not available for a project idea, CDM Africa will work with your business to facilitate the formal approval by the CDM Executive Board.
CDM Africa has a depth of experience both participating in and managing the successful development and approval of small scale and large scale methodologies under the CDM. We have also lodged a number of requests for revisions.
Methodologies we have worked with include the following:
- New Gold Standard Biomass Methodology developed by CDMA with FirstClimate
- AM0049
- AM0036
- Request for Revisions
- Solar water heater methodology for Southern Africa
Participating in the development of a new methodology for mine methane to energy
