Projects

Emfuleni Power Project

CDM Africa was appointed as the CDM consultant on this 115 MW waste gas-to-energy project at the premises Mittal Steel in Vanderbijlpark. The developer is Eco Emfuleni and Bateman Africa. The CERs on this project will be in the order of 600 000 tonnes per annum and are claimed for grid electricity displacement and thus the methodologies ACM 0004 and ACM 0002 were used to calculate the build margin, operating margin and combined margin for South Africa. The PDD has appeared for the prescribed periods on the websites of both the UNFCCC and the SA DNA, has received a draft validation and Host Country Approval and is presently undergoing final validation subject to clarification on a Request for a Revision of ACM 0004 to include the decommissioning of existing captive power in the Project Activity.

PetroSA
Biogas to Energy Project

WSP BioTherm is the developer of this biogas-to-energy project located at the PetroSA refinery, Mosselbay and CDM Africa was appointed to carry out all CDM related work and project manage the acquisition of all requisite environmental approvals from DEADP, the provincial environmental authority. The biogas at this plant has been flared for more than 15 years due to the fact that it could not be economically utilised for electricity generation. MethCap (Pty) Ltd, the project sponsor and a sister company of WSP BioTherm then approached PetroSA and acquired permission to establish an Independent Power Producer ('IPP') plant on the site. The project will use GE Jenbacher engines to generate approximately 4,2 Megawatts of electricity from the biogas and the electricity will be used onsite, decreasing the dependence of the plant on the national grid. An annual royalty will be paid by MethCap to the local municipality on behalf of PetroSA for the exclusive purpose of poverty alleviation in the area.

The project was registered in October 2006, commissioning in May 2007. WSP in South Africa is acting as the EPC contractor and Project Manager and the plant will be managed by WSP Facilities Management.

Kanhym Farm
Biogas-to-Energy Project

Kanhym farm in Mpumalanga is the biggest pig farm in South Africa, home at any given time to in excess of 40 000 pigs. At present the manure from the pigs is pumped into a settling pond, from where it emits about 25 000 tonnes of CO2e per annum. The project includes the construction of a covered, anaerobic lagoon where the manure will produce methane. The methane will be captured and flared in phase 1 of the project. If sufficient gas is generated, a second phase has been planned which may make Kanhym independent of the electricity grid through the generation of electricity from the biogas.

CDM Africa was appointed as the end-to-end carbon advisor on this project and is also tasked with project managing the acquisition of environmental and other regulatory approvals. After submission of a PIN to the SA DNA, a Letter of No Objection was received. The PDD is under development and the environmental approval process has been initiated.

Letaba Citrus
Biomass Fuel Switching Project

At this large citrus farm in Limpopo there is a need for steam in the processing facility, which to date has been met by burning coal on-site. However, the surrounding area is one where forestry is prevalent and there is abundant saw dust available as a waste product which is mostly stock-piled, which again leads to methane formation.

The project, a Joint Venture between WSP BioTherm and African Realty Trust (the owner of Letaba) will replace the coal boiler with a multi-fuel boiler and a fuel switch from coal to the biomass saw dust. As a result of burning sawdust, the project will prevent the release of approximately 19 000 tonnes of CO2e annually, but there would also be an avoidance of methane through lesser stock-piling of the saw dust.

CDM Africa has been appointed as the carbon advisor (tasked inter alia with drafting all documentation) and has further been asked to project manage the acquisition of environmental and other regulatory approvals. This process is under way. The project was chosen for the winning bid by Myclimate/BioTherm to offset the emissions from the FIFA World Cup 2006. FIFA will be buying a large portion of the CERs generated by the project.

Lafarge East Africa
Fuel Switching

CDM Africa has been retained as the CDM consultant for fuel switching at cement plants in Mombassa and Hima, the first of which is proceeding immediately and the second being due to proceed in 2008. CDM Africa undertook initial assessment of the plants and CDM viability assessments and is currently proceeding with CDM project documentation for the Mombassa plant. Both projects will utilise biomass to partially displace fossil fuel and will use ACM0003.

Mittal Steel, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa
Electricity generation using waste heat

Mittal Steel is the world's largest global steel company, with shipments of 49.2 million tons and revenues of over $28.1 billion in 2005. Mittal owns steel-making facilities in 16 countries, spanning four continents. The company employs 224,000 people spanning 49 different nationalities and is listed on the New York and Amsterdam stock exchanges.

Mittal is developing a waste heat to energy project at its Vanderbijlpark Works and appointed CDM Africa as its end to end CDM consultant. At present a PIN has been completed and a pre-validation procedure is being initiated to get clarity on certain complexities of the project after which the PDD will be finalised and the project will move into validation. On this specific project CDMA assisted with determining the baseline in very complex circumstances where there was interplay with the Eco Emfuleni Project being developed on the same project site but by a different developer.

NCP Alcohols ("NCP") Durban, South Africa
Fuel switching

NCP Alcohols is a leading producer of high quality fermentation alcohol for the South African and international beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical markets. The company is implementing a CDM project linked to the switch from coal as a feedstock to gas. CDM Africa has been appointed as the end to end CDM consultant. The PDD is currently under development.
