PFG Building Glass (Pty)
Project 1: Fuel switch coal to fuel gas
CDM Africa developed and managed all CDM related documentation and components of the project
PFG produces high quality float glass at their plant in Springs, Gauteng, South Africa. The production of float glass requires a significant amount of heat generation in the glass furnace. In the baseline this heat is generated from Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Natural Gas, with occasional supplementation of electricity imported from South Africa’s national electricity grid.
The PFG factory in Springs will convert their older assembly line and furnace from firing HFO and natural gas to use natural gas only, thereby eliminating the consumption of HFO completely.
Natural gas is a less carbon intensive fuel source compared to HFO. Essentially the elimination of the HFO used in the furnace will significantly reduce the amount of green house gas emissions emitted from the PFG process. It is for this reduction in green house gas emissions that CERs will be claimed. The sale of these emission reduction credits will provide valuable foreign income to the South African economy.
